Fitting In
Having recently discovered the show Monster High on Netflix, I watched the first couple episodes.
The first episode was really intriguing. This quest to fit in somewhere when you don’t fully belong in one group or another.
Humans need to find their tribe. It’s so central to their identity.
It’s truly refreshing when the spotlight is cast on the non-conformists, the different ones, the outsiders. I loved the way a human eventually gets to fit into and belong in monster school even though she doesn’t meet the school’s procedural requirements.
It was all good so far.
Then they had the school principle validate the human’s determined desire to find a place in monster school based on her intuition on finding a DNA tests with 50% werewolf genes.
That was a disappointing addition to an otherwise marvelous story.
You can’t change who you are - you can’t change what he makeup of your DNA. But if you really wanted to belong somewhere, you go and find yourself a place there like the human did. She shared some core values with the monsters. She identified with them in some way that was not attributed to DNA, at least in the beginning.
And then it all came crashing down with, “well, you have part of those genes so yeah, it makes sense that you were drawn to this.” While that is an entirely valid viewpoint, the story was so much more compelling when it was just a plain ol’ human who shared nothing in common in outward experiences with monsters to be taken in to the fold.
Maybe there’re other stories out there your immutable as don’t matter as much as your abilities that you’re willing to nurture into growth.
